Children are especially vulnerable in times of war, often lacking the ability to understand ongoing events and express their need for help. And one of the most tragic aspects of the current war in Ukraine is the struggle of children who have lost one or both parents due to the war. Families (or foster families) of orphaned children require special resources, including increased financial assistance due to the loss of one or both breadwinners in the family, psychological help and social integration assistance. In some cases, the families of orphaned children who had remained in Ukraine throughout the conflict wish to leave the country following the loss of one or both parents, to make sure the children can live in a safe and nourishing environment.

SA2U’s third project, therefore, aims to support orphaned children of war whose families have moved or are planning to move to Germany or Switzerland. SA2U works with partner organizations that provide support to orphaned children and their families throughout their move to Germany or Switzerland. On the one hand, the organizations make sure the children’s basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing and medicine are covered. In parallel, psychological support, educational support and mentoring is provided by specialists. The aim is to satisfy as many physiological and psychological needs of orphaned children as possible and blanket them with care and security to help them overcome their tragic loss.

The contributions received for this project are used to support families who are known to SA2U’s partner organizations and who move to Germany or Switzerland with a child or children who have lost one or both parents due to the war. The families must pass a “due diligence” procedure with partner organizations to prove their qualification for support, and the amount of financial support depends on the case at hand and the assistance and services the child requires.

A written request from the partner organization detailing the child’s and family’s case and the requested financial assistance is required. In principle, up to CHF 5,000 (Switzerland) or EUR 4,000 (Germany) in financial support will be provided for each family, with up to 10 families.
